Unravelling the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Associated Immune-Mediated Disorders in the Singaporean Population

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is becoming more common in Singapore, especially among young adults, causing significant health problems and reduced quality of life. IBD is linked with other immune disorders like Behcet’s disease, spondyloarthropathy, uveitis and psoriasis, which share genetic and environmental risk factors.
Our study aims to explore the genetic and lifestyle factors contributing to IBD and these related disorders in Singapore’s multi-ethnic population. Using data from the PRECISE-SG100K project, we will identify genetic variants associated with IBD and related immune disorders, investigate how lifestyle factors like diet, physical activity, and stress affect disease risk and progression, and understand the shared and distinct mechanisms behind these conditions.
We will also explore the interactions between genetic and environmental factors. We will access whole genome sequencing (WGS) data, electronic medical records, and lifestyle information for patients with IBD and related conditions, as well as healthy individuals for comparison. Our findings will help develop targeted prevention and treatment strategies, improving care and outcomes for individuals with these complex diseases.
This research will provide crucial insights to guide the development of personalised medical approaches tailored to Singapore’s diverse population.
