*NEW* - The SHARP (Singapore Hip frActuRe and osteoPorosis outcomes) Study: A National Study of Hip Fracture Burden, Outcomes, and Secondary Osteoporosis Prevention in Older Adults in Singapore

Hip fractures are serious injuries in older adults and often lead to loss of independence, long hospital stays, and increased healthcare needs. In Singapore, as the population ages, hip fractures are becoming more common and place a growing financial and logistic burdens on patients, caregivers, and the healthcare system. A hip fracture is also a warning sign of underlying bone weakness (osteoporosis), yet many patients do not receive timely treatment to prevent future fractures.

This study aims to use national healthcare data to better understand the impact of hip fractures among older adults in Singapore. We will examine how often hip fractures occur, how this has changed over time, and the healthcare costs involved. We will also study patient outcomes after a hip fracture, such as survival, hospital readmissions, and use of other health care resources like community and long-term care services.

Importantly, the study will assess whether patients receive timely osteoporosis treatment after a hip fracture, how soon treatment is started, how long it is continued, and whether this affects the risk of future fractures and survival. By identifying gaps and variations in care, this research aims to inform healthcare planning and improve recovery and fracture prevention for older adults in Singapore.
